Book on waiting list

This event is currently fully booked, but please add your name to the waiting list on the Eventbrite page via the waiting list button. If a place becomes available we will contact you, but this will also help us gauge interest in running the event again.

The School of Scottish Studies Archive is a public archive and is open Tuesday to Friday, between 10am and 4pm.

Spend the day at the School of Scottish Studies Archives (SSSA), where you will learn from archive collections about the traditional Scottish craft of cleekit gloves. You will also have the opportunity to create cleek work in an afternoon crafting session.

Cleeking was seen as distinct from knitting or crochet and in 19th century rural Scotland was a craft popular with male farm workers. The fabric was made with a special handmade hook and patterns were passed on orally from father to child. The practice seemed to have fallen out of use by the mid 20th century. The Archives hold a series of correspondence which details this fascinating craft and we are delighted to provide you with the opportunity to engage and create with these archive materials in a very tangible way.

In addition to cleeking you can learn how to explore other Scottish crafts through the Archives’ sound, photographic, manuscript and film collections.

Coffee, lunch and craft materials will be provided.

This is a free event, but booking is essential.

This event may be photographed and will be recorded for promotional or recruitment materials for the University and University approved third parties. For further information please contact the organiser.
